How to use a menstrual cup ?  will I be able to use a menstrual cup? is using a menstrual cup going to be painful :(. well, if these are the questions running in your mind while you think about switching to a menstrual cup, it is quite obvious. I had the same questions before using the menstrual cup and I was skeptical about using it. Now, I have been using a menstrual cup for more than 6 months and now I am gonna share my experience, which might be helpful for you girls.

What is a menstrual cup?

Well, a menstrual cup is a female hygiene cup which many women out there are using during menstruation by inserting the cup into the vagina. Menstrual cups collect the menstrual fluid and after using a menstrual cup you don't have to worry about leakage, although initially, you would want to use a pad just to see if it is leaking. But slowly you will get used to it. Women now prefer to use menstrual cups over sanitary pads. All we need to do is keep it hygienic. Menstrual Cups are made of flexible grade silicone.

How and why did I switch to a menstrual cup?

To be honest, it was not easy for me because of various reasons. As we all know we live in a country (India) where talking about menstruation is still taboo. For the longest time, I didn't hear women around me talking about "Periods". When I got my periods I was in 9th class and until then nobody ever spoke to me about periods. I had seen ads and sanitary pads in my mother's purse so kind of had an idea how to use the pad. After using pads for so many years, I never got used to it, every month used to be a struggle. Because of fewer talks about periods, I couldn't know what else can be used.
Thanks to social media, finally read about the Menstrual cup. Immediately  I wanted to switch to the menstrual cup for more than 2 years,  but I was quite skeptical about it. I didn't know how it works and if it is safe to use the cup. I kept postponing it up until 6 months back. I read that a lot of women use menstrual cups and this gave me the courage to go ahead and I did. I am sharing this because we all share similar stories when it comes to menstruation, especially in India. I switched to Menstrual cups because I hated wasting so many sanitary pads which were not even biodegradable.

How to use a menstrual cup?

Using a menstrual cup is quite easy and I know the thought of inserting a cup into your vagina going to freak you out. well, the same happened to me but now I regret that why I didn't start using the cup early. First, make sure you have sterilized your cup well. Wash your hands properly then take the cup fold it the way shown in the picture and insert it into your vagina. After inserting you will be able to feel the tip of the cup and slowly when you get up you are not gonna feel anything.

After a few minutes, you won't be able to feel the cup. Although you can use the cup for a max of 12 hours or so(depending on the brand you are using) I would suggest you take it out a few hours before that. After taking it out wash it properly and re-insert it. These cups come in different sizes, you need to choose according to your age and blood flow.

Why use a menstrual cup?

Today there are so many companies making menstrual cups and the best part is everyone can afford it. You save a lot of money by just using a menstrual cup because you don't have to buy sanitary pads every month which costs you a lot if you do the overall calculation.
